10 Noyce, Robert
SUBJECT AREA: Electronics and information technology[br]b. 12 December 1927 Burlington, Iowa, USA[br]American engineer responsible for the development of integrated circuits and the microprocessor chip.[br]Noyce was the son of a Congregational minister whose family, after a number of moves, finally settled in Grinnell, some 50 miles (80 km) east of Des Moines, Iowa. Encouraged to follow his interest in science, in his teens he worked as a baby-sitter and mower of lawns to earn money for his hobby. One of his clients was Professor of Physics at Grinnell College, where Noyce enrolled to study mathematics and physics and eventually gained a top-grade BA. It was while there that he learned of the invention of the transistor by the team at Bell Laboratories, which included John Bardeen, a former fellow student of his professor. After taking a PhD in physical electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953, he joined the Philco Corporation in Philadelphia to work on the development of transistors. Then in January 1956 he accepted an invitation from William Shockley, another of the Bell transistor team, to join the newly formed Shockley Transistor Company, the first electronic firm to set up shop in Palo Alto, California, in what later became known as "Silicon Valley".From the start things at the company did not go well and eventually Noyce and Gordon Moore and six colleagues decided to offer themselves as a complete development team; with the aid of the Fairchild Camera and Instrument Company, the Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation was born. It was there that in 1958, contemporaneously with Jack K. Wilby at Texas Instruments, Noyce had the idea for monolithic integration of transistor circuits. Eventually, after extended patent litigation involving study of laboratory notebooks and careful examination of the original claims, priority was assigned to Noyce. The invention was most timely. The Apollo Moon-landing programme announced by President Kennedy in May 1961 called for lightweight sophisticated navigation and control computer systems, which could only be met by the rapid development of the new technology, and Fairchild was well placed to deliver the micrologic chips required by NASA.In 1968 the founders sold Fairchild Semicon-ductors to the parent company. Noyce and Moore promptly found new backers and set up the Intel Corporation, primarily to make high-density memory chips. The first product was a 1,024-bit random access memory (1 K RAM) and by 1973 sales had reached $60 million. However, Noyce and Moore had already realized that it was possible to make a complete microcomputer by putting all the logic needed to go with the memory chip(s) on a single integrated circuit (1C) chip in the form of a general purpose central processing unit (CPU). By 1971 they had produced the Intel 4004 microprocessor, which sold for US$200, and within a year the 8008 followed. The personal computer (PC) revolution had begun! Noyce eventually left Intel, but he remained active in microchip technology and subsequently founded Sematech Inc.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFranklin Institute Stuart Ballantine Medal 1966. 10) и, неужели•USAGE:(1.) В отрицательных предложениях для объединения отдельных его частей употребляется сочетание never... or: She never writes or reads in the evening. We went into the mountains, and we stayed there for a few weeks. In towns and (in) villages. I really must try and (must) see him to-morrow. My friend and his sister are not on holiday; (б) союз and 1.2, соединяя однородные члены предложения, может образовывать сочетания, составляющие единое целое. Ham and eggs is his favorite breakfast. Here comes the old man and his son. Here is your hat and gloves. Where are my hat and gloves? Где же мои шляпа и перчатки?; •• если однородные подлежащие, выражены инфинитивами (но не герундиями!): To travel and see other countries was what he dreamt of. Он мечтал путешествовать и повидать другие страны.; ••• если соединяемые союзом and слова относятся к одному и тому же лицу (тому же предмету, той же идее): The great scientist and social leader begins a new campaign. The black and white dress she had on was very becoming. The famous composer and singer is going to give a series of concerts. The black and the white dresses were very becoming. The famous composer and the famous singer are taking part in the contest. And также присоединяет дроби к целым числам и соответствует русским предлогам с, и: two and three quarters - 23/4 два и три четверти; four and a half 41/2 четыре с половиной. 2. I decided to call him and warn him against going there. (3.) В разговорной речи с рядом глаголов, таких как to try, to go, to come, to stay, to stop, to watch союз and с последующим инфинитивом без частицы to образует императивные сочетания, которые обычно используются для выражения приглашения, предложения, увещевания. Go and look at the timetable. Come and see us more often. Let's go and play chess. Let's wait and see. Mind and bring the book. Глаголы to try и to wait в данной конструкции обычно употребляются в форме Future: I'll try and answer the question. I'll wait (I would rather wait) and see how things go. I'll try and get some unsalted butter. The patient went and died on me. When things seemed settled he went and left the country. I'll go when I'm good and ready. He was good and angry. The room was nice and cool. There are friends and friends. There are dogs and dogs, some mean, some friendly. They went on and on. Они шли все дальше и дальше. better and better все лучше и лучше; colder and colder все холоднее; hours and hours часами; He talked and talked. /Он вес говорил и говорил.; (д) в начале вопросительных предложений привносит элемент удивления (6.): And what of it? And did you say so? She was cold and angry. He ate the fish and was sick. She felt unwell and took some medicine. (7.) Союз and (7.) (8.) Идею соединения могут передавать разнообразные союзы и словосочетания, весьма близкие по значению к союзу and: also, as well, too, not only... but also, besides, likewise, in addition to, moreover, furthermore: We went to the circus. We visited the museum as well. We went to the circus. We went to the museum too. We went to the circus as well as the zoo. We went to the circus. We also visited the zoo. Not only did we go to the circus, we also went to the zoo. Besides going to the zoo, we went to the circus. In addition to visiting the zoo, we went to the circus. Paul went to the circus. So did Peter. Конструкция not only... Если часть сложного предложения, вводимая besides, in addition to, not only, стоит в начале сложного предложения, то она отделяется запятой: Besides buying these books, we bought a few pictures. In addition to visiting the zoo, we went to the circus. Not only did we go to the circus, we went to the zoo -

Verb
"Gustar" better avoided ► While gustar is one of the main ways of translating like, its use is not always appropriate. Used to refer to people, it may imply sexual attraction. Instead, use expressions like caer bien or parecer/ resultar simpático/ agradable. These expressions work like gustar and need an indirect object:
I like Francis very much Francis me cae muy bien or me parece muy simpático or agradable
She likes me, but that's all (A ella) le caigo bien, pero nada más
Like + verb ► Translate to like doing sth and to like to do sth using gustar + ((infinitive)):
Doctors don't like having to go out to visit patients at night A los médicos no les gusta tener que salir a visitar pacientes por la noche
My brother likes to rest after lunch A mi hermano le gusta descansar después de comer ► Translate to like sb doing sth and to like sb to do sth using gustar + que + ((subjunctive)):
My wife likes me to do the shopping A mi mujer le gusta que haga la compra
I don't like Irene living so far away No me gusta que Irene viva tan lejos
"How do you like...?" ► Use qué + parecer to translate how do/ did you like when asking someone's opinion:
How do you like this coat? ¿Qué te parece este abrigo?
How did you like the concert? ¿Qué te ha parecido el concierto? ► But use cómo + gustar when using how do you like more literally:
How do you like your steak? ¿Cómo le gusta la carne?
Would like ► When translating would like, use querer with requests and offers and gustar to talk about preferences and wishes:
Would you like a glass of water? ¿Quiere un vaso de agua?
What would you like me to do about the tickets?
I'd very much like to go to Spain this summer Me gustaría mucho ir a España este verano Literal translations of I'd like are better avoided when making requests in shops and restaurants. Use expressions like the following:
I'd like steak and chips ¿Me pone un filete con patatas fritas?, (Yo) quiero un filete con patatas fritas For further uses and examples, see main entry* * *
